Zakat
Zakat, one of the Five Pillars of Islam, is a mandatory act of charity and a fundamental religious obligation for Muslims. It requires eligible Muslims to give a certain percentage of their wealth to those in need, as a means of purifying their wealth and distributing it among the less fortunate. There are numerous Quranic verses and Hadiths highlighting the significance of Zakat. In the Clear Qur’an translation, some of these verses include:
Surah Al-Baqarah (2:267): “O you who believe, spend from the good things you have earned and of what We have produced for you from the earth. And do not pick the inferior to spend from it, although you yourselves would not take it except by overlooking. And know that Allah is Self-Sufficient, Praiseworthy.”
Surah Al-Baqarah (2:43): “And establish prayer and give zakat and bow with those who bow.”
Surah Al-Tawbah (9:60): “Zakat expenditures are only for the poor and for the needy and for those employed to collect [zakat] and for bringing hearts together [for Islam] and for freeing captives [or slaves] and for those in debt and for the cause of Allah and for the [stranded] traveler – an obligation [imposed] by Allah. And Allah is Knowing and Wise.”
These verses emphasize the importance of Zakat in Islam and its benefits to society. Some of the benefits of Zakat include:

Hypothetically, if all the wealthy in the world contributed 2.5% of their wealth to be distributed like Zakat, based on global wealth data, what would we get? According to the Credit Suisse Global Wealth Report 2021, the total global wealth was approximately USD 514 trillion.
Assuming the top 1% of the wealthiest people in the world hold about 45% of the total global wealth (which is a rough estimate based on various sources), their combined wealth would be around:
(0.45) * (514 trillion) = USD 231.3 trillion
Now, if all these wealthy individuals gave 2.5% of their wealth to be distributed like Zakat, the total amount would be:
(0.025) * (231.3 trillion) = USD 5.78 trillion
This is a rough estimate and does not take into account various factors like the specific wealth distribution, asset types, and the different principles of wealth taxation across countries. Nevertheless, if all the wealthy in the world were to contribute 2.5% of their wealth for distribution like Zakat, it would result in a substantial sum that could significantly impact poverty reduction and social welfare globally.
